Marie de Vera + Sarah Gonsalves – The Style Co.

A heady obsession with cake and sangria was the defining inspiration for this decadent, indulgent feast by Marie de Vera and Sarah Gonsalves and their team, who specialise in event and wedding styling and planning. “The cakes were our centrepieces – but we added Spanish flavour with rich florals against lots of greenery, berries, pomegranates, timber, crisp whites and a hint of gold,” Marie says. A rich, warm palette of reds, orange and hot pink cradle this inviting setting, which, Marie adds, “is supposed to look messy, much like our lunches at home after the first two courses.” Rather than have a “perfectly set” table, Marie liked the idea of casually stacked plates and cutlery, which, on top of the flowers and foliage, creates a plentiful and practical setting.

A beautiful Mess
“We wanted a look that reminded us of an indulgent outdoor lunch, away from the city, with friends, food and lots of sangria,” Marie says. Steering clear of casual dining, she also suggests clothing the outdoor table and using the “good” crockery.

Pass it on
For shared meals, don’t be afraid to layer your plates. Try an entree plate or bowl on top of the main plate with a patterned napkin in between. “It’s practical and adds fullness to the table,” Marie says. “And don’t be afraid to mismatch.”
